my_new_wallet

1. Go to your Monero folder

First, make sure you are in the folder where your Monero programs live.

Bash
cd ~/monero

2. Run the Wallet Creator

To create a brand new wallet file, run the following command. You can replace my_new_wallet with whatever name you like:

Bash
./monero-wallet-cli --generate-new-wallet my_new_wallet

3. Follow the Prompts

The terminal will guide you through the setup:

  1. Password: Enter a strong password. You won't see any characters as you type—this is normal for Linux security.

  2. Language: It will ask for a language for your "seed." Type 0 for English (usually).

  3. The Secret Seed: This is the most important part. It will display 25 words.

Stop and write these words down on paper. If your computer dies or you lose your password, these words are the only way to recover your money.

How to use your new wallet later

Next time you want to open this specific wallet, you'll use the --wallet-file flag:

Bash
./monero-wallet-cli --wallet-file my_new_wallet

Quick Check

If you want to see your new public address to receive Monero, just type address once you are inside the wallet program.

Would you like me to show you how to create a "View-Only" key? This allows you to see incoming money without actually having the power to spend it—great for security on a VM.
